The template name is not just a label in your account. It also forms the basis of the installation package name for Joomla, which is why it pays off to choose a simple one.
What you will learn
- Distinguish the template name from the site title.
- Use characters that the editor safely accepts.
- Choose a name that remains clear even after export.
Simple naming rules
The name can be 1 to 20 characters long. The editor converts it to lowercase, removes Czech diacritics, and retains the letters a–z, digits, and hyphens. Instead of a name like "Šablona pro Kavárnu", use for example kavarna or kavarna-praha.
| Entered name | Better form | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Moje Šablona | moje-sablona | No spaces or diacritics. |
| Web firmy 2026 | firma-2026 | Short and easily recognizable. |
| Nový e-shop!!! | novy-eshop | No exclamation marks or other special characters. |
The template name is not the website title
A Joomla template determines the appearance and layout of the site's sections. However, the site itself can have a different public title, such as "Rodinná pekárna U Tří rohlíků". The installation name of the template can simply be pekarna. You set the public title, logo, page titles, and body text separately.
If you create multiple variants, add a short distinction: pekarna-light, pekarna-dark, or pekarna-v2. Avoid long sentences and personal data that you wouldn't want to see later in the downloaded file name.
Renaming does not rename an already installed copy
Changing the template name in your account affects future exports. It will not automatically rename the package you previously installed on a website. It will install as a new template!
