Creating a Blank Joomla Template

A blank template is a clean and safe foundation for a design where you want to decide on every section yourself.

What you will learn

  • Create a new template from your account.
  • Enter a valid short name.
  • Understand what the application prepares upon creation.
  • Start with your first row in the Grid panel.

Step-by-step procedure

  1. In your account, select New Template.
  2. Enter a short installation name. Use at most 20 characters, lowercase letters, numbers, and hyphens.
  3. Confirm the creation. The server prepares a safe default configuration, a unique internal code, and the first history point.
  4. Open the new template card in the editor.
  5. On the empty canvas, select the prompt Open Grid and add your first section.

What "blank" means

A blank template is neither broken nor incompletely loaded. It contains the mandatory structural mainbox area and safe default values, but it has no prepared decorative sections or modules. Therefore, the editor displays a prompt guiding you to the grid.

First add rows and positions. Only then drag and drop modules into them. This procedure keeps the design clear and helps you understand how the parts of a Joomla template relate to each other.

The template name is cleaned up automatically

Diacritics are removed, letters are converted to lowercase, and spaces are replaced with an appropriate format. Still, it is best to enter a simple name right away, for example my-company or hotel-2026.
