Moving, reordering, cloning, and deleting modules

Inserted modules do not have to stay in their initial place. You can move them between positions, change their order, create copies, or delete unnecessary instances.

What you will learn

  • Move a module to another valid Joomla position.
  • Change the order of multiple modules within a single position.
  • Safely clone a module to use as a starting point for another variant.
  • Delete the correct instance and use Undo if needed.

Moving, reordering, cloning, and deleting modules

Four distinct operations

Move changes the target position while keeping the module's settings intact. Reorder adjusts the sequence within the same position. Clone creates a new, independent instance with the same initial settings. Delete removes the instance from the layout.

Each instance has its own internal ID. This is crucial for elements like slideshows. A cloned instance receives new internal IDs so that its controls and individual carousels do not conflict with the original.

Recommended safe workflow

  1. Select the module on the canvas or in Layers and verify its name and position.
  2. To move it, drag it strictly over an active, highlighted position. The Componentbox is not a valid target.
  3. If you need a similar block, use cloning and then modify the copy's content or parameters.
  4. Before deleting, make sure you are not removing the primary navigation or another essential element.
  5. After any structural operation, check the result across all viewport sizes.

Where a module can be moved

The target must be a recognized, enabled position that is usable for the current layout. The server then validates the module contract and the entire configuration. If the target position is full or restricted, the operation will not be saved.

The editor renders an inert representation of the module. Therefore, moving an item modifies the design layout first, not the current live site. A subsequent Import reads supported values from Joomla into the design, whereas Force can update an existing Joomla module—including its position—or create a missing one. Always verify the target module and keep a backup before performing a Force sync.

Example: suppose you have three similar info cards and want to move the middle one to a different row. Select it first in Layers or on the canvas, then move it. Changing text inside a cloned copy will not affect the original.

The order of items within a position matters for accessibility and mobile responsiveness. Modules placed side-by-side visually may stack according to their saved order when scaled down to narrower screens. Make sure essential navigation does not wind up below supplementary content.

Deletion is a structural change

Deleting is not the same as temporarily hiding an element. The editor creates checkpoints for significant actions, so an immediate mistake can usually be reversed using Undo. However, the history stack resets to a new baseline whenever the editor is reopened.

Next step: Layers tree view.
